Everyone Communicates, Few Connect

Everyone Communicates, Few Connect

By: John C. Maxwell

As a former pastor and high successful and sought-after public speaker, John C. Maxwell knows what he is talking about when it comes to connecting with people. This book provides simple yet powerful suggestions and ways for others to learn the art of connecting.

What is the difference, you may ask? The difference between connecting and merely communicating is the difference between making a difference and just going through the motions. Thus if you need to give a speech, you could either do so with the goal of talking for the prescribed amount of time, stroking your own ego, and just getting the thing done, or really taking the time and effort to consider your audience, your message and its delivery and preparing a speech that has the most impact possible: one that truly connects with your audience.

True connection with an audience of any size has inspiration as a by-product, and Mr. Maxwell covers ways to achieve this sometimes elusive result. But inspiration is what it is all about. The question for any leader should not be: “How can I get them to do X?” but rather: “How can I get them to want to do it?”

This book has many useful pointers for anyone who wishes to inspire others as a speaker, whether you have an audience of one or of thousands, but perhaps one of the most memorable is the way Mr. Maxwell communicates his point that it’s not enough to simply tell the truth; anyone who wishes to truly connect with their audience must tell the truth in an interesting fashion.

In short, anyone who is in a leadership role, whether as a public speaker, a manager, or other type of leader, will definitely benefit from the points made in this book, but then again, so would pretty much anyone. The ability to not only communicate but to authentically connect with whomever is around you can and does lead to raises, career advancement, the realization of goals, better personal relationships, and a more satisfying life experience. Check out this book if you are interested in any of the above.

Thanks for this in depth review of John Maxwell’s book. I have enjoyed his previous books but had not yet heard about this one. From your review, this seems like such a timely and relevant book that can help all of us to cut through the noise and focus once again on truly connecting. The downside of technology is that we are saying more words but with less substance. Can’t wait to read this book!
