Know What You Need To Know
I occasionally recommend products to people. I don’t recommend anything like the number of products I’m asked to recommend, but when I see something that I think is useful, I’m happy to pass it along to others with my endorsement.
I don’t expect everyone to buy it though. I don’t even want everyone to buy it. (That’s true of my own products, too!)
I don’t want people to spend money on anything that they aren’t going to use and benefit from.
That attitude isn’t unique to me. You’ll hear the same thing at conferences and talks around the country from any speaker and teacher worth listening to. It doesn’t make it less true.
If you buy a product that I’ve recommended and don’t use it, you’ll never buy anything that I’ve recommended again. That doesn’t benefit me, and it doesn’t benefit you.
Your first job as a growing entrepreneur then isn’t to rush out and buy every book and information product you can find on everything vaguely related to your line of business. You’ll never get anywhere like that.
It’s to know what you need to know.
If you’re building an Internet business, you don’t need to know HTML anymore. Once, you did. Not today. My HTML is horrible and I’m the world’s worst coder.
But you do need to know about AdSense. You need to know about social media. You need to know how to create or find content, how to optimize your website, and how to bring in traffic. You need to know how to scale your business so that when it takes off, you can take off with it.
You need to know how to do all of the things that no one else can do for you.
But you don’t need to know the small stuff. If someone can do something better than you, pay them to do it for you as soon as you can afford to do so. You’ll get better results and you’ll see your investment of funds repaid faster than if you were investing your time in trial and error.
Education is a vital part of growth but there’s now far too much for any one person to know. Choose what you want to learn and excel in that area. Then hire the best for the rest.
