Pace Yourself For Success
I’ve been online since 1995. That feels like a ridiculously long time. I can remember when programs were written in Basic and games came on floppy disks that held less information than the memory card I now put in my camera.
But I haven’t been a successful Internet entrepreneur since 1995. The money started to come later. It took me a while to figure out how to create content, to bring in traffic, and to bring that traffic back. And it wasn’t until I figured out how to get AdSense working that I really started to make money from that traffic.
That was a sudden leap in revenues that signaled I was in business. But it was only one of the leaps my Internet business would enjoy. I still had to figure out how to use other advertising systems like Chitika and Kontera. I had to learn how to build coaching programs that others would benefit from and want to purchase. I had to build affiliate networks to sell my products and create the contacts that would allow me to recommend other products that I trusted. When social media came along, I had to learn its marketing potential and discover the best strategies.
None of those things happened overnight. They all took time and dedication. The success I’m blessed enough to enjoy now is the result of more than 15 years of education and effort.
There’s an old saying that states that the best time to plant a tree is 20 years ago. The second best time is today.
If you’re starting to build an Internet business now, it’s important to remember that you don’t get to start with a fully-grown oak tree. You’re putting down roots. Sure, growth now is faster than it’s ever been. You can put up a website in minutes instead of months, use a dozen different strategies to build traffic and start earning right away. It won’t take you 15 years to enjoy the fruit of your labor.
But it won’t happen overnight either. Building anything worthwhile takes time, so plan for the future. Don’t assume that in three months’ time you’ll be telling your boss what to do with his J.O.B. Assume instead that every day, you’ll be putting in some work, building your empire, and troubleshooting problems.
And assume that if you keep going, if you’re persistent and determined, willing to learn and dedicated to your goal, you will get there.
