As you mentioned, people have done it, and are living their lives this way each and every day.  For me, it's been three years, and way before I even had knowledge of The 4 Hour Work Week book.  Timothy Ferriss did a fantastic job at putting this lifestyle out there, and I too feel that it is definitely a great read for anyone who is at a phase in their lives where they want to live the New Rich lifestyle...  Time freedom and income, and just having the ability to pursue long time passions and goals.
