The Element – How Finding Your Passion Changes Everything

The Element – How Finding Your Passion Changes Everything

By: Ken Robinson, Ph.D.

If you are an entrepreneur or just starting a business of your own, chances are you’ve heard more than one person talk about the importance of doing something you’re passionate about. This book is a treatise on that subject, but it goes above and beyond in explaining why, in giving many inspiring case studies, and in suggesting some ways for you to work your passion into your life even if you are unable to make your passion your living.

The philosophies of this author seem to jive really well with those of Daniel Pink in his recent book Drive. The point seems to be that until you find your passion, you will just be going through the motions in your life, and once you find what it is, whether or not it makes you rich is less important than whether or not you actually devote time to it, at least as far as personal happiness is concerned.

Some of the most food for thought in the book comes from the sections on education and how the current system is about as far removed from helping children pursue their passions, whatever those may be, as it is possible to get.

This book is well worth the read, and just might inspire you to finally stop with the excuses and do the thing you most want to do, whether you do it for the money or just for the love of it. It is all about examining how we define success as a culture – is the most successful person the one with the most stuff or the one who gets to do things he or she loves on a daily basis? Dr. Robinson argues convincingly for the latter, and holds up success story after success story of people who are able to do just that.
