None of us likes to think about the fact that we will all one day die, yet it is an unavoidable truth, one that, no matter how much we pretend it isn’t so, will eventually catch up with us all. As unpopular as this topic is, Neely’s book looks to address what parents should know to prepare legally, financially, and emotionally to care for their family in case of their death(s).
Wear Clean Underwear is broken into three parts, covering three different families’ stories. The stories read like a Choose Your Own Adventure book, presenting real life scenarios, followed by two to three options (levels or options of preparation your family has), which then lead you down a path. While some of the possible scenarios are grim, if not downright scary, Neely spares no detail in urging you to create a detailed plan to protect your children, covering all possible contingencies and details.
Necessities to prepare according to Neely include: specific instructions and contacts in case of your death; a legacy of CDs, DVDs, and letters created by you and your partner for your children to digest throughout their lives in your absence; appointments of specific guardians including contingency guardians; a trust and trustee for your assets; a living will detailing medical instructions for your care; and creating multiple clear points of contact to hold and be familiar with all information in case of an emergency.
Perhaps the most emphatic of her advice is to seek out a family lawyer whom you trust. Investing the money and time into this specialized counsel will help you to create a plan which will allow you to sleep well at night, knowing that in even the most terrible of circumstances, your children will be cared for, provided for, and loved as you intended.
This book is a quick and interesting read, one that we recommend to anyone who has a family and wants to ensure they are prepared for any circumstance.
